When a visionary architect and his wife flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of the modern United States, their lives are forever changed by a mysterious wealthy client. This film has an intermission built into an actual 70mm film reel that counts down from the fifteen minute mark. Featured on The 7PM Project: Episode December 10, 2024 (2024). It is ambitious and has some beautiful sequences, especially the opening sequence with a shot of the Statue of Liberty. Brody, as usual, is strong. The score is strong too. The film has an epic feel, but also, I would say, some unnecessary scenes here and there. I didn’t think all the sex scenes were necessary, or at least I thought they were too drawn out and various other interstitial shots that felt over the top. I didn’t really like Pearce’s performance. While she plays an unpleasant character, admittedly, there’s just an artificiality to her delivery and mannerisms that I didn’t like here. The epilogue of the film ends a bit bland and strange. . It’s just one of those "weird" endings, but that’s pretty typical of an a24 film. I cared about Brody’s character, but where did he REALLY end up? Ask yourself. It gets a little lost for me when all the other subplots and architectural explorations are going on, and then it just ends. Thematically, the film does a good job of reflecting the tension between art and capitalism. Is it too long? Yes, but the intermission dampens its impact. Would I want to see it again? No..
